So for a long time I was completely boycotting reality TV. It's just so ridiculous. I couldn't knowingly support the sort of outrageous behavior you see on a lot of reality tv shows; particularly the dating shows. Even more particularly, the dating shows on VH1. They have their own level of disgrace. I really just can't stand to see women shaking their asses, kissing ass, and making complete fools of themselves, for some man they don't even know. For about 10 months I didn't watch any reality TV at all. I was completely over it.
But today after a long week of work, I wanted to watch something mindless yet engaging. I flipped through the channels and where do my fingers land entirely by chance? VH1. And what's on? I Want To Work for Diddy 2. Instantly, I was sucked in and there was no turning back.
Now let me just say that I did watch the first season of I Wanna Work for Diddy and, to me, it's really not quite on the same trashy level as the useless dating shows that VH1 generally plague's us with. I'll give Diddy that. But it is still a bunch of grown people largely willing to make fools of themselves for a complete stranger; which I'm generally against. It's not intelligent television (especially seeing that one bitch who thinks she's the shit, but just comes off as crazy as hell for no reason at all cuz she doesn't even need a reason to show her ass), but overall, I'm not gonna become less intelligent for watching it.
But then For the Love of Ray J came on. I was losing brain cells left and right. And I couldn't stop watching. Although, it would be great, I can not say that I'm above the reality TV bullshit cuz sometimes, I just want to, ya know? Anyway, these women have no shame whatsoever and I don't understand why. There are two older women (beautiful women) that I feel probably have some sense in their heads. But the younger girls? Loose cannons, all of them. AND they're completely clueless about life. Where do I begin? Oooh oooh!I know, let's start with names.
Now just like any other classless reality dating show, the women (or men, but in this case women) have to protect their identity and solidify their objectification by being assigned a name by the person whose "love" they're all vying for. And what kind of names does he give them? Names like Luscious, and Paradeez, (as in Pair of D cups), Exotica, and Caliente. Ray J starts off the show talking about how he really wants to find the right person for him, someone understanding and who will be there for him. Really Ray J? Cuz the first thing you did was choose to identify them based on physical attributes. Stripper names at that. What the hell else can you expect from them? These are little girls. Of course they're gonna act a fool and not want to do anything but satisfy you physically. You're starting off on the wrong foot, sweetheart.
Then there's the confessionals, which are just plain comedy. Again, unfortunately, I wish I could say that I'm a better person than this, but I laughed at these girls' ignorance. I laughed hard. One of the girls said in the confessional "I wanna be with Ray J, he's so cute...I love him." Please stop. You're embarrassing yourself. Basing love on being cute a ludicrous concept. Now, I don't mind appreciating a man who's fine as hell. But love? Bitch please. You're dumb.
And can we talk about Ray J? He gets ready to sit down at the dinner table with all the girls and says I feel like Barack Obama: Yes we can. *Insert blank, confused face+smart-ass smirk* WHAT? Did you just connect your reality TV trash to the single most ground-breaking President in our nation's history? Negative. I'm gonna need for you to fall back. You're doing WAY too much. Speaking of doing too much, Ray J is a lot less eloquent than I had imagined. Not saying that you have to be an amazing public speaker to sing R&B, but I feel like the intonation in his voice is so intense, that it takes away from whatever he's saying. And then he just says things so weird. For example, one of the girls dances for him and he says "To be so little, you doin so much big thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiings." Umm, is English your first language? Cuz you sound uneducated and/or new to the country. It makes me uncomfortable to listen to him.
Ultimately, I guess I'm wrong for expecting these people to act as responsible adults. That doesn't really make sense because there are life lessons that have clearly escaped these people. If you've seen the show maybe you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen the show... don't watch it. Retain your IQ. I'm through.
